Brothers, Daedalus & Elphinstone Liveaboards
Three offshore reefs, one week, and the most dependable shark diving in the Red Sea: the route divers call BDE.
BDE is shorthand for the three offshore reefs that define big-animal diving in the Egyptian Red Sea: the Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone. The Brothers are two small islands roughly 67 km off El Quseir. Daedalus is a single reef with a lighthouse on it, about 80 km out from Marsa Alam. Elphinstone sits much closer to the coast, a long finger of reef off Marsa Abu Dabbab. Between them they hold the schooling hammerheads of summer, the oceanic whitetips of autumn, grey reef and silvertip sharks, the odd thresher at dawn, and walls thick with soft coral and gorgonians.
European operators often sell the same week as a diving safari, and you will see it under names such as the Golden Triangle or simply Daedalus. The shape barely changes: a check dive near port, a long overnight crossing, a day at the Brothers, another night's sailing to Daedalus, then Elphinstone on the way home. Some southern weeks swap the Brothers for Fury Shoals, St John's or Elba Reef and keep Daedalus as the shark day. Those departures appear here too, alongside the northern weeks that add a day at the Brothers to the wrecks.
This is open-water diving. Most dives start from a RIB on the up-current side of the reef, drop to a plateau or onto the wall, and finish with a safety stop in the blue under your own surface marker buoy. The return on that commitment is the best chance in the Red Sea of a shark encounter that lasts longer than a glimpse. The dates below come from our live calendar, so they show what is actually sailing.

Best time for Brothers, Daedalus & Elphinstone
The offshore parks are dived through most of the year, but the two headline sharks keep different calendars. Scalloped hammerheads school off the north plateau at Daedalus from June to August, with May and September possible either side; that is the summer window, with water around 26 to 29°C and generally kinder seas. Oceanic whitetips turn up from early summer, peak in October and November, and are still possible in December, at Elphinstone and the Brothers in particular. Grey reef sharks patrol the walls all year.
Winter changes the trip more than it changes the wildlife list. From January to March the water drops to roughly 21 to 23°C, the northerly wind builds a short, steep sea on the crossings, and some boats move to sheltered northern routes until spring. Weeks still run, but a 7 mm suit and a tolerance for a lively overnight passage help. If you can pick freely, late May and June give a fair hammerhead chance in warming water, October and November are the whitetip months, and September sits between the two and often gives a reasonable shot at both.
Experience you'll need
BDE is not a first liveaboard. Most operators ask for Advanced Open Water or equivalent and around 50 logged dives, and the offshore marine parks are generally quoted as needing that 50-dive minimum. A few boats publish a lower figure, but 50 is the realistic bar. Beyond the card, the guides want to see that you can descend promptly from a RIB, hold a depth in open water with no reef beneath you, send up a surface marker buoy from depth, and cope with current that changes direction at the corners of a reef.
A dive computer and an SMB are required for every diver, gloves are not permitted, and night dives are not allowed inside the marine parks, so the night dives on this route happen near port or on coastal reefs. Most of the sharks are seen between about 20 and 40 m early in the morning, and depths are kept within recreational limits. Divers who are uneasy in current or prone to seasickness usually get more from the northern wrecks or a southern reef week first, and there is nothing wrong with that order.
If you sit close to the line, tell us honestly what and where you have dived. We would rather suggest a different week than have you spend this one watching from the deck.
How the trip works
Most BDE weeks start and end at Port Ghalib, about 15 minutes from Marsa Alam airport. Some sail from Hurghada, which lengthens the run to the Brothers but suits flights into Hurghada; the road transfer from Hurghada airport to Port Ghalib takes four hours or more. You usually board on the first evening and sleep in port, then make the check dive the next morning. Daedalus is roughly nine hours' sailing from Port Ghalib, so the long legs are run overnight and you wake on site.
A typical offshore day starts with a wake-up around first light for the dawn dive, which is the one for hammerheads and threshers. Breakfast follows, then a second dive mid-morning, lunch, and a third in the afternoon. Expect three dives a day at the offshore reefs and up to four on coastal days, which adds up to around 16 dives over seven nights once the crossings are taken out. Under current rules boats are typically allowed one day at the Brothers, and the order of sites is always at the captain's discretion; weather can reorder or shorten the offshore legs.
Government reef tax, marine park and port fees are usually charged on top of the fare and paid on board, often with a fuel surcharge. Depending on the boat they run from around €100 to a few hundred euros per person, and your confirmation lists the exact amounts. Nitrox is widely available, usually as a flat charge for the week, and it suits repeated dives at 25 to 30 m; you need the certification, which many boats can teach on board. Bring a reliable SMB on a long line, a whistle, and consider a personal locator beacon.
Brothers, Daedalus & Elphinstone: common questions
What does BDE stand for on a Red Sea liveaboard?
Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone: three offshore reefs in the Egyptian Red Sea, usually combined in a 7-night week from Port Ghalib or Hurghada. Operators also sell it as a Daedalus diving safari or the Golden Triangle.
When is the best time for hammerheads and oceanic whitetips on BDE?
Hammerheads at Daedalus peak from June to August, with May and September possible. Oceanic whitetips peak in October and November and are still possible in December. September often gives a reasonable chance of both.
How many logged dives do I need for the Brothers, Daedalus and Elphinstone?
Typically Advanced Open Water or equivalent and around 50 logged dives; the offshore marine parks are generally quoted at that minimum. Experience of current and open-water descents matters as much as the number.
Can I night dive at the Brothers or Daedalus?
No. Night diving is not allowed inside Egypt's offshore marine parks, so night dives on a BDE week are made near port or on coastal reefs.
Is a Daedalus diving safari the same as BDE?
Often, but not always. A Daedalus safari keeps Daedalus as the main shark reef and may pair it with Elphinstone, Fury Shoals, St John's or Elba Reef instead of the Brothers. Check the route name on each departure; both kinds are listed on this page.
