About Liveaboard Diving
What is a liveaboard dive trip?+
A liveaboard is a boat that serves as both your accommodation and dive platform. You live on the boat for the duration of your trip, typically 3-14 nights, which allows you to access remote dive sites that day boats cannot reach. Most liveaboards offer 3-4 dives per day, comfortable cabins, meals, and equipment storage.
Do I need to be an advanced diver for liveaboard trips?+
It depends on the destination. Some trips are suitable for Open Water certified divers with 20+ logged dives, while others require Advanced Open Water certification and 50-100+ dives. Technical diving destinations like Truk Lagoon or deep wrecks may require additional certifications. We clearly indicate experience requirements for each trip.
What certifications do I need?+
At minimum, you need an Open Water certification from a recognized agency (PADI, SSI, NAUI, BSAC, etc.). Many trips require Advanced Open Water, and some specialized trips need Nitrox, Deep Diver, or technical certifications. We'll help you understand the requirements for your chosen destination.
Is liveaboard diving safe?+
Liveaboard diving is generally very safe when proper protocols are followed. Reputable operators maintain strict safety standards, emergency equipment, and trained crew. We only work with operators who have excellent safety records. That said, diving always carries inherent risks, which is why we recommend comprehensive dive insurance.
Booking & Planning
How far in advance should I book?+
We recommend booking 6-12 months ahead for popular destinations and peak seasons. Some sought-after routes (like Galápagos or special expeditions) can fill up a year or more in advance. Last-minute deals do appear, but selection is limited.
What's included in the trip price?+
Typically: accommodation, all meals, diving (usually 3-4 dives/day), tanks, weights, and guide services. Usually NOT included: flights, dive insurance, equipment rental, nitrox fills, marine park fees, alcoholic beverages, and gratuities. We provide a detailed breakdown for every trip.
What payment methods do you accept?+
Payment methods vary by operator but typically include bank transfer and credit cards. Some operators accept PayPal. A deposit (usually 25-50%) is required to secure your booking, with the balance due 6-8 weeks before departure.
What is your cancellation policy?+
Cancellation terms vary by operator and are communicated at booking. Generally: full refund minus fees for early cancellations, partial refund for moderate notice, no refund for last-minute cancellations. We strongly recommend trip cancellation insurance.
Faneca Expeditions Services
What makes Faneca Expeditions different?+
We're a boutique agency focused on personalized curation, not volume booking. We dive these destinations ourselves, maintain relationships with quality operators, and provide white-glove concierge service. We don't just sell trips—we help you find the right expedition for your experience level, interests, and travel style.
How does the Trip Matchmaker work?+
Our quiz asks about your diving experience, preferences (big animals vs. macro, wrecks vs. reefs), travel style, budget, and timing. Based on your answers, we recommend destinations and specific trips that match your profile. It's free and takes about 2 minutes.
Do you charge booking fees?+
We receive commission from operators when you book through us—you don't pay extra. Our prices are typically the same as booking direct, but you get personalized advice, itinerary planning support, and someone in your corner if issues arise.
Can you help with group bookings?+
Absolutely! Group bookings often qualify for discounts. We can help coordinate dates, handle individual requirements, and even arrange full-boat charters for dive clubs or private groups.
Destinations & Trips
What destinations do you cover?+
We curate trips worldwide, with strong expertise in the Red Sea, Maldives, Indonesia (Raja Ampat, Komodo), Galápagos, Palau, Philippines, Thailand, and Pacific destinations. If there's a liveaboard destination you're interested in, ask us—we likely have trusted operators there.
When is the best time to dive [destination]?+
Every destination has optimal seasons based on weather, currents, and marine life patterns. Our blog has seasonal guides, or use our Trip Matchmaker with your preferred dates—we'll recommend destinations that are at their best when you want to travel.
What if I'm a solo traveler?+
Solo travelers are welcome! Most liveaboards have shared cabin options for solo divers at lower rates. It's also a great way to meet fellow diving enthusiasts. We can match you with boats known for welcoming solo travelers.
Practical Questions
Do I need dive insurance?+
Yes, absolutely. Standard travel insurance usually excludes diving-related incidents. We recommend DAN (Divers Alert Network) insurance or similar specialized coverage that includes evacuation, hyperbaric chamber treatment, and trip cancellation.
What should I pack?+
Essential: certifications, logbook, dive computer, mask, and personal items. Most people bring their own mask, computer, and wetsuit; other equipment can usually be rented. Check our detailed packing guide in our blog for trip-specific recommendations.
I get seasick—can I still do liveaboards?+
Many divers prone to seasickness successfully enjoy liveaboards. Modern boats have stabilizers, and you're often underwater when seas are rougher. Strategies include: choosing calmer destinations/seasons, booking a mid-deck cabin, using medication (consult a dive-aware doctor), and focusing on the horizon.
