When to Dive the Red Sea: Month-by-Month Guide

When to Dive the Red Sea: Month-by-Month Guide

Ask a dive operator when to dive the Red Sea and they'll say "year-round." Ask a serious diver and they'll name two weeks. Both answers are right. The Red Sea dives every month, but you are making meaningful tradeoffs every time you book outside the peak windows.

This guide walks through the year honestly. We'll tell you the month-by-month water temperatures, what's biting when, when the oceanic whitetips show up offshore, and the two windows most serious divers target.

The short answer

Best all-round month: October — water still warm, summer crowds gone, viz peaks, pelagic season in full swing.

Best hammerhead window: July–August at Daedalus for schooling scalloped hammerheads.

Best oceanic whitetip window: October–November at Elphinstone and the Brothers.

Best value month: January — coolest water, lowest prices, fewest crowds, but you'll want a thicker wetsuit.

Worst month for offshore routes: December — weather windows tight, some offshore itineraries don't run.

Below is the detail.

Month by month

January

  • Water temp: 22°C
  • Air temp: 15–22°C
  • Viz: excellent (30m+)
  • Pelagic action: quiet
  • Crowds: low (after New Year)
  • Prices: low shoulder

Coldest of the year. 5mm wetsuit with hood and gloves, or drysuit if you dive thick-suited. Northern itineraries (Abu Nuhas, Rosalie Moller, Thistlegorm) run reliably. Offshore routes operate but weather can scrub days. Good value month for divers who don't mind colder water.

February

  • Water temp: 22°C
  • Air temp: 16–23°C
  • Viz: excellent
  • Pelagic action: quiet to building
  • Crowds: low
  • Prices: low shoulder

Similar to January. Some operators are in drydock or reduced schedule. Avoid the first week if Chinese New Year falls there (big uplift in Asian client bookings).

March

  • Water temp: 22–23°C
  • Air temp: 18–25°C
  • Viz: excellent
  • Pelagic action: improving
  • Crowds: low to mid
  • Prices: mid shoulder

Water starting to warm, still cool enough for a 5mm. Offshore routes reliable. Classic start-of-season month for return divers.

April

  • Water temp: 23–25°C
  • Air temp: 20–28°C
  • Viz: peak
  • Pelagic action: good
  • Crowds: mid (Easter lifts)
  • Prices: mid

One of the best overall months. Water warm enough for 5mm, weather mostly calm, offshore dives running at full schedule. Easter weeks are booked solid; avoid if you want quieter boats.

May

  • Water temp: 25–26°C
  • Air temp: 22–32°C
  • Viz: peak
  • Pelagic action: good, building
  • Crowds: mid
  • Prices: mid–high

3mm wetsuit becomes comfortable. Strong all-round month for Brothers–Daedalus–Elphinstone trips.

June

  • Water temp: 26–28°C
  • Air temp: 25–36°C
  • Viz: peak
  • Pelagic action: strong
  • Crowds: high (European summer holiday starts)
  • Prices: high

Summer heat arrives. Surface intervals become fatiguing — it's often over 35°C on deck. Hammerhead season starts at Daedalus. Book early.

July

  • Water temp: 27–28°C
  • Air temp: 28–38°C
  • Viz: peak
  • Pelagic action: peak (hammerheads at Daedalus)
  • Crowds: very high
  • Prices: peak

Hammerhead season peaks. The daytime heat is genuinely taxing. Bring sun protection, rash guards, and electrolytes. Boats at full capacity.

August

  • Water temp: 27–29°C (warmest)
  • Air temp: 28–40°C
  • Viz: peak
  • Pelagic action: peak
  • Crowds: very high
  • Prices: peak

Hottest month. Hammerheads still active. European summer holiday peaks. This is the most expensive and most crowded window of the year.

September

  • Water temp: 27–28°C
  • Air temp: 25–34°C
  • Viz: peak
  • Pelagic action: peak
  • Crowds: mid (schools back)
  • Prices: mid–high

Conditions still peak but tourist numbers drop sharply. One of the best weeks of the year for serious divers who want peak conditions without peak crowds.

October

  • Water temp: 26–28°C
  • Air temp: 22–30°C
  • Viz: peak
  • Pelagic action: peak (oceanic whitetips arrive)
  • Crowds: mid
  • Prices: mid–high

The month most serious divers pick if they can. Oceanic whitetips start showing at Elphinstone and the Brothers. Weather mostly still calm. If you can only do one Red Sea week a year, October is the answer.

November

  • Water temp: 25–27°C
  • Air temp: 20–28°C
  • Viz: peak
  • Pelagic action: peak (oceanic whitetips)
  • Crowds: mid
  • Prices: mid

Oceanic whitetip season continues. Still an excellent month. Watch for the first weather windows closing by end of month.

December

  • Water temp: 23–25°C
  • Air temp: 18–25°C
  • Viz: still good
  • Pelagic action: tapering
  • Crowds: mid (Christmas lifts)
  • Prices: variable (Christmas weeks spike)

Weather gets inconsistent. Some offshore itineraries don't run. Christmas and New Year weeks are booked early and expensive. Avoid the holiday weeks if you want better pricing.

The two weeks most serious divers target

The second week of October. Best intersection of peak water, peak viz, pelagic season in full swing, and tourist numbers dropping off. Book 9–12 months ahead for the best boats.

The last week of September. Similar conditions to October but slightly warmer water. Quieter than July/August peak. Good all-round choice.

Which itinerary when

  • Wreck-focused northern routes (Thistlegorm, Rosalie Moller, Abu Nuhas): year-round.
  • Offshore Brothers/Daedalus/Elphinstone: April–November optimal; December–March weather-dependent.
  • Deep south (Rocky, Zabargad, St John's): May–November for most reliable weather.
