When to Dive Socorro: Month-by-Month Guide

Unlike most year-round destinations, Socorro has a proper dive season — November through May. From June through October the operators are in drydock, running other routes, or doing maintenance. There is no "quiet shoulder" season. You're either in the window or you're not.
This guide walks through the seven active months with specific focus on the two species that drive the trip: giant oceanic mantas and humpback whales.
The short answer
Best single month: February or March — peak manta activity plus peak humpback whale song.
Warmest water: April–May — end of season, whales departing, mantas still reliable.
Coolest/most variable: November–December — season opening, encounters less predictable.
Best value: November or May — shoulders of the season, lower prices, slightly lower crowds.
Not available: June–October — off-season.
The two species windows
Giant mantas (Mobula birostris): present throughout the entire November–May season at The Boiler and other cleaning stations. Peak interaction reliability: January through April.
Humpback whales: January through early April. The whales come to breed, give birth, and sing. You cannot scuba-dive with them (Mexican law), but you hear them on every dive during this window, and permitted surface snorkel encounters are possible with some operators.
Month by month (active season)
November
- Water temp: 25–26°C
- Surface conditions: variable, season opening
- Mantas: arriving, reasonable reliability
- Whales: not yet
- Crowds: low
- Prices: shoulder
Season opens. First boats out. Mantas building up; whales not yet. Better weather reliability than December typically.
December
- Water temp: 23–25°C
- Surface conditions: can be rough, thermoclines deeper
- Mantas: established at cleaning stations
- Whales: first arrivals by end of month
- Crowds: mid (Christmas lifts)
- Prices: high (Christmas weeks)
First humpbacks start showing up in the last week or so. Water cooler than people expect. 7mm wetsuit recommended. Christmas weeks premium-priced.
January
- Water temp: 21–23°C (coolest)
- Surface conditions: occasionally rough crossings
- Mantas: peak interaction
- Whales: establishing, heard on many dives
- Crowds: high
- Prices: peak
Water at its coolest. Full wetsuit plus hood common. Whale song becoming consistent. First month with the iconic mantas + whales combo.
February
- Water temp: 21–23°C
- Surface conditions: generally calmer
- Mantas: peak
- Whales: peak (breeding, calves)
- Crowds: peak
- Prices: peak
The iconic Socorro month. Whale song on essentially every dive. Mantas interacting daily. Mother-calf humpback surface encounters on good-weather days. Book 9–12 months ahead.
March
- Water temp: 22–24°C (warming)
- Surface conditions: generally favorable
- Mantas: peak
- Whales: peak
- Crowds: peak
- Prices: peak
Essentially tied with February for best month. Water marginally warmer. Visibility often at season-best. Book early.
April
- Water temp: 24–25°C
- Surface conditions: favorable
- Mantas: still strong
- Whales: departing (early April); mostly gone by end
- Crowds: mid–high
- Prices: high
Last whale weeks early in the month. Mantas holding steady. Water warming. Good window if you missed the Feb/Mar peak bookings.
May
- Water temp: 25–26°C (warmest)
- Surface conditions: generally calm
- Mantas: reliable at cleaning stations
- Whales: gone
- Crowds: mid
- Prices: shoulder
End of season. Whales departed, mantas still reliable, water at its warmest. Value window for divers who don't need the whale song specifically.
Off-season (June–October)
No commercial liveaboard operations. Avoid any operator claiming they're running trips this window — they probably aren't, and the conditions wouldn't support the itinerary if they were.
Best weeks to book
- Second or third week of February: peak manta + whale window, best combined experience.
- Last week of February through first week of March: arguably the absolute peak if you can get it.
- Third week of April: if you want warmer water and are willing to sacrifice whale encounters.
Booking lead times
- Peak weeks (Jan–Mar): 9–12 months ahead for premium operators.
- Shoulder weeks (Nov, Apr, May): 4–6 months usually sufficient.
- Christmas/New Year weeks: 12+ months, premium pricing.
