Planning guide: Solomon Islands diving guide: wrecks, reefs, seasons and the two boats compared
The Solomon Islands sit at the eastern edge of the Coral Triangle, and the diving reflects that: dense reef fish, healthy hard-coral gardens, soft-coral-draped walls, and visibility that often runs to around 30 metres. What sets it apart is how little traffic these reefs see. This is genuinely off the beaten track — fewer divers, simpler infrastructure, and a real sense of being somewhere most people never reach.
Solomon Islands liveaboard diving covers an unusually wide spread in a single trip. You'll move between the coral and macro of Marovo Lagoon (one of the world's largest saltwater lagoons), the volcanic swim-throughs and jungle-fed caverns of the Russell Islands, and the WWII wrecks of Iron Bottom Sound, where the seabed between Guadalcanal and the Florida Islands holds ships, planes and submarines.
It suits intermediate divers comfortable with the occasional current and the realities of a remote destination. There's plenty for wreck and macro shooters, and warm water (27-30C) makes for long, relaxed dives.

Best time to dive Solomon Islands
The dry season, roughly April to November, brings the calmest seas and the clearest water, which is why we point most divers at spring and autumn. April through June and again October into November are the standouts — settled conditions and strong visibility without the wetter, less predictable stretch from late November into March. Diving runs year-round and the rains here are not monsoonal, but for the most reliable trip we favour those shoulder windows. Water stays warm (around 27-30C) throughout, so the season is about surface conditions and clarity rather than temperature.

Solomon Islands diving — common questions
When is the best time to dive the Solomon Islands?
The dry season, April to November, gives the calmest seas and best visibility. April-June and October-November are the sweet spots. Diving is possible year-round and the wet season is not monsoonal, but for settled conditions we steer most trips toward spring and autumn. Tell us your travel window and we'll match it to the right months and route.
What experience level do I need for a Solomon Islands liveaboard?
It's best suited to intermediate divers. Many sites are gentle — the Bonegi shore wrecks start near the surface — but some Russell Islands and channel dives carry current, so comfort with mild drift and good buoyancy helps. We're honest about which sites demand more, and we match the itinerary to your actual experience, not just your card.
What makes Solomon Islands diving different from elsewhere in the Pacific?
Two things: variety and emptiness. Few destinations pack Coral Triangle reefs, historic WWII wrecks and volcanic swim-throughs into one trip, and almost nowhere offers them with so few other divers around. The trade-off is remoteness and simpler infrastructure — part of the appeal, but worth planning for. We'll talk you through the logistics before you commit.
