When to Dive Raja Ampat: Month-by-Month Guide

Raja Ampat is the most biodiverse water on earth. It is also genuinely seasonal in a way that Red Sea and Maldives aren't, and getting the month wrong means paying top price for a trip where half the best sites are closed to weather.
This guide walks through the year for divers planning 2026 trips, with specific focus on manta season at Dampier Strait, Misool (southern Raja) itinerary windows, and the weather-driven gaps most operator pages gloss over.
The short answer
Overall best month: February — peak manta season, calm weather, full operator availability.
Secondary best: November or early December — similar conditions, slightly lower crowds, mantas arriving.
Manta peak at Dampier Strait: December–March.
When not to go: June–September — wet/windy season. Many liveaboards drydock or reroute.
Best value: early April — tail end of season, prices softening, conditions still strong.
The geography that drives the decision
Raja Ampat sits in the eastern Indonesian archipelago at the northwestern tip of West Papua. The diving divides into two main zones:
- North/Central (Dampier Strait, Fam, Waigeo): manta-ray concentrated, big current diving, most boats based from Waisai.
- South (Misool): reef-structure diving, fewer divers, different seasonal window.
The monsoon hits these zones differently. North Raja is more weather-sheltered; Misool is exposed to stronger swell in the off-season.

Which itinerary when
- North Raja (Dampier Strait, Waigeo): October–April.
- Misool (south): November–March (southern reefs exposed outside this window).
- Combined north + south itineraries: December–March.
Most 10-night itineraries combine both zones in the peak window.
Key planning notes for 2026
- Book 9–12 months ahead for peak months. The best boats for the best weeks sell out early.
- Flights route via Jakarta or Bali to Sorong (SOQ). The domestic leg is often the most fragile part of the trip. Build a buffer day in.
- Marine park fees are charged on top of boat prices (~€100 per diver).
