Best Time to Dive: A Season-by-Season Guide

Timing isn't everything in diving — but it's close. The same destination can offer completely different experiences depending on when you show up. Visit at the right time, and you'll witness something magical. Wrong time? You might be staring at empty blue water wondering where all the sharks went.

Let's make sure you show up when the ocean is ready to perform.

Red Sea, Egypt

The Sweet Spot: March-May, September-November

The Red Sea is that rare gem that delivers year-round, but it definitely has its favorites:

  • Spring (Mar-May): Visibility for days, warming water, shark activity building up
  • Summer (Jun-Aug): Hot topside (we mean hot), but offshore sites are pumping with sharks
  • Autumn (Sep-Nov): Prime time. This is when the BDE route (Brothers, Daedalus, Elphinstone) earns its legendary status
  • Winter (Dec-Feb): Cooler water, thicker wetsuits, fewer crowds if you don't mind the chill

Our pick: October. The hammerheads at Brothers are worth planning your whole year around.

Maldives

The Sweet Spot: January-April

Ah, the Maldives. Where the water is warm, the mantas are majestic, and the monsoons dictate everything:

  • Northeast Monsoon (Dec-Apr): Calm seas, crystal visibility, manta cleaning stations going off
  • Southwest Monsoon (May-Nov): Choppier crossings but whale sharks galore and plankton-rich waters
  • Transition months (Apr-May, Oct-Nov): A bit of a gamble — could be amazing, could be messy

Our pick: February for mantas that'll make you weep. August if whale sharks are your thing and you've got sturdy sea legs.

Raja Ampat, Indonesia

The Sweet Spot: October-April

Raja Ampat is the place where marine biologists go to feel inadequate. The biodiversity is absurd, and the seasons are (mercifully) mild:

  • Oct-Apr: Dry season, best visibility, calmest seas
  • May-Sep: Wetter, more plankton, occasional whale sightings
  • Year-round: Consistently warm (28-30°C), consistently stunning

Our pick: November. Sweet spot between peak season crowds and optimal conditions.

Galápagos, Ecuador

The Sweet Spot: June-November (for the big stuff)

The Galápagos doesn't do subtle. It's dramatic, challenging, and absolutely unforgettable:

  • Warm Season (Dec-May): Warmer water (22-26°C), better visibility, calmer surface conditions
  • Cool Season (Jun-Nov): Colder water (18-22°C), nutrient-rich, and this is when the hammerheads and whale sharks throw their annual party

Our pick: September-October. Maximum animal encounters, but only if you can handle cooler water and some current. Not for beginners.

Socorro, Mexico

The Sweet Spot: November-May (only option, actually)

Socorro plays hard to get. Hurricane season closes everything down, making the diving window precious:

  • Nov-May: Giant mantas, friendly dolphins, humpback whales passing through
  • Jun-Oct: Closed. The ocean is having a moment.

Our pick: January-March. The mantas are enormous and weirdly cuddly.

Planning Tips

  1. Book 6-12 months ahead for peak season — everyone wants the same windows
  2. Consider shoulder seasons — fewer boats, better deals, still great diving
  3. Ask about moon phases — they affect shark aggregations more than you'd think
  4. Be flexible — weather windows shift; rigid plans break
  5. Talk to us — we know the nuances that guidebooks miss
