Best Airports for Liveaboard Diving: Routes and Transfer Tips

The diving is the easy part. Getting to the boat is where liveaboard trips go wrong.
Missed connections. Dive gear lost on a domestic transfer. Arriving at midnight to find the port is a 3-hour drive from the airport. These are solvable problems — but only if you plan for them.
Here's the complete logistics guide for every major liveaboard region, with actual airport codes, real transfer times, and the mistakes we've seen people make.
Red Sea, Egypt
Hurghada (HRG)
The main hub for Red Sea liveaboards. Direct flights from most European cities on Ryanair, Wizz Air, TUI, EasyJet, and local carriers. Flight time from London is about 5.5 hours, from Lisbon about 5 hours.
Transfer to port: 15-30 minutes by taxi or operator shuttle. Most liveaboards depart from Hurghada Marina or nearby private berths. Your operator will send transfer details 1-2 weeks before departure.
Budget tip: Ryanair and Wizz Air run seasonal routes to HRG from multiple European cities. Fares can drop below EUR 80 return if you book 2-3 months ahead. Baggage is extra — expect EUR 30-50 for 20kg checked.
Marsa Alam (RMF)
Better for southern itineraries (Fury Shoals, Elphinstone, St. Johns). Fewer direct flights than Hurghada, but growing. TUI and charter operators run seasonal routes from northern Europe.
Transfer to port: Varies. Port Ghalib marina is 15 minutes from RMF. Hamata port (for deep south itineraries) is about 2.5 hours south by road. Confirm your departure port before booking flights.
Key advice for Egypt
Fly in the day before departure if your flight arrives after 4pm. Most boats leave early morning on day one, and a delayed evening flight means missing the boat. One-night hotels near HRG marina cost EUR 20-40.
Maldives
Male / Velana International (MLE)
The only international airport. Direct connections from Colombo (CMB), Dubai (DXB), Singapore (SIN), Istanbul (IST), and seasonal European charters. From Europe, the most common routing is via Dubai (4-hour connection) or Istanbul (3-hour connection).
Transfer to port: Most liveaboards pick you up directly from the airport dock — MLE is on an island (Hulhule), and boats pull right up to the seawall. Transfer time: 0-30 minutes depending on which side of the dock. Genuinely the easiest liveaboard transfer in the world.
Domestic transfers: If your itinerary starts from a southern atoll, you may need a domestic flight to Gan (GAN) or a seaplane to your starting point. Domestic flights on Maldivian Airlines cost $200-$400 return. Seaplanes are $400-$600 return and only operate during daylight — if your international flight arrives after 3pm, you'll overnight in Male.
Key advice for Maldives
Book flights arriving before 2pm if you need a same-day domestic connection. Seaplanes stop at 3:30pm. If you arrive late, the Hulhule Island Hotel is a 5-minute walk from the terminal — about $120/night, not cheap, but convenient.
Indonesia
Bali (DPS) — Gateway to Komodo
DPS has direct flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, Tokyo, and multiple Australian cities. From Europe, route via Singapore (SIN) or Kuala Lumpur (KUL) — both offer 2-3 hour connections.
Transfer to Komodo: Domestic flight from DPS to Labuan Bajo (LBJ) on Wings Air, NAM Air, or Batik Air. Flight time: 1 hour 15 minutes. Fares: $50-$120 one way. LBJ airport is 10 minutes from the harbour.
Luggage warning: Domestic carriers in Indonesia enforce weight limits strictly. Wings Air allows 10kg checked (!). Batik Air and Lion Group allow 20kg. If you're carrying dive gear, book with Batik Air and pay for extra baggage in advance. Buying excess at the airport counter costs roughly 2-3x the online rate.
Sorong (SOQ) — Gateway to Raja Ampat
No international flights to Sorong. Route via Jakarta (CGK) or Makassar (UPG). Jakarta to Sorong is about 5 hours with a possible stop in Makassar. Garuda, Batik Air, Lion Air, and Sriwijaya operate this route.
Transfer to port: Sorong airport to the harbour is 15 minutes. Most operators arrange this.
Key advice: Build in an overnight in Sorong. Flights from Jakarta arrive throughout the day, but the morning departures to Sorong sometimes sell out weeks in advance. Having a buffer day eliminates the risk of missing your boat. Hotels near Sorong port: $30-$60/night.
Thailand
Phuket (HKT)
Direct flights from across Asia and seasonal European routes. From Europe, cheapest routings are via Bangkok (BKK or DMK) on Thai AirAsia, Bangkok Airways, or Nok Air. BKK to HKT is 1 hour 20 minutes, fares from $30 one way.
Transfer to Khao Lak: Most Similan liveaboards depart from Tab Lamu pier near Khao Lak, about 1.5 hours north of HKT by road. Operators arrange minivan transfers — typically included in the trip price or $15-$25 if not.
Transfer to Chalong Bay: Some Andaman Sea itineraries depart from Chalong pier, 45 minutes south of HKT.
Key advice for Thailand
Bangkok has two airports. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) handles full-service carriers. Don Mueang (DMK) handles most budget carriers. Transferring between them takes 45-60 minutes by taxi. Don't book a tight connection between the two.
Philippines
Manila (MNL) — Hub for everything
The main international gateway. Direct from most Asian capitals, Middle Eastern hubs, and some US cities.
For Tubbataha: Fly MNL to Puerto Princesa (PPS) on Cebu Pacific or Philippines AirAsia. Flight time: 1 hour 15 minutes. Fares: $40-$80 one way. The liveaboard departs from PPS harbour, 20 minutes from the airport.
For Malapascua/Visayas: Fly MNL to Cebu (CEB). Flight time: 1 hour 20 minutes. Transfer from CEB airport to the northern bus terminal, then 3-4 hours by bus to Maya port, then 30-minute boat to Malapascua island. Total door-to-door from CEB: 5-6 hours. Alternatively, some operators arrange private van transfers (3 hours to Maya).
Cebu (CEB) — Growing hub
Increasingly has direct international flights from Singapore, Seoul, Hong Kong, and other Asian cities. If your itinerary is Visayas-based, CEB may save you a connection.
Luggage tip: Cebu Pacific has notoriously strict baggage policies. Base fare includes carry-on only (7kg). Checked bags are sold in blocks: 20kg for roughly $15-$25 if bought online, double at the counter. Buy your luggage allowance at booking time.
Mexico
Cabo San Lucas (SJD) — Socorro
Direct flights from major US cities (LAX, SFO, DFW, DEN, PHX) and seasonal Canadian routes. From Europe, route via Los Angeles (LAX) or Dallas (DFW).
Transfer to port: SJD to Cabo San Lucas marina is 30 minutes. Most Socorro operators include airport transfers or meet you at a designated hotel.
La Paz (LAP) — Sea of Cortez
Fewer direct routes than SJD. Best connections through Mexico City (MEX) on Volaris or Aeromexico. MEX to LAP is 2 hours 20 minutes.
Transfer to port: LAP to Marina de La Paz is 15 minutes.
Solomon Islands
Honiara (HIR)
Routes via Brisbane (BNE) on Solomon Airlines or via Port Vila (VLI) on Air Vanuatu. Brisbane to Honiara is about 3 hours 30 minutes. Flights are limited — typically 3-4 per week.
Transfer to port: The Bilikiki and other liveaboards typically berth at Point Cruz wharf, 10 minutes from the airport. But confirm — some operators use outer berths.
Key advice: Build in a full buffer day in Honiara. If your Brisbane flight cancels, the next one might be 2-3 days later. Book refundable accommodation.
Universal Transfer Tips
- Arrive the day before. This is the single best piece of logistics advice for any liveaboard trip. An overnight near the port costs $30-$100. Missing your boat costs $3,000+.
- Carry essentials in your hand luggage. Mask, computer, medications, certification cards, and one set of reef-safe sunscreen. If your checked bag goes missing, you can still dive with rental gear. You cannot dive without your certification or prescription mask.
- Print boarding passes for domestic flights. Airport Wi-Fi in Sorong, Puerto Princesa, and Labuan Bajo is unreliable. Don't rely on your phone.
- Know your luggage limits. Domestic airlines in Asia enforce weight limits that European and American carriers don't. 20kg is standard. 15kg is common on small carriers. 10kg exists. Weigh your bag at home.
- Carry USD cash. In Egypt, Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Maldives, small amounts of US dollars solve problems that credit cards can't — tips for porters, visa on arrival fees, that last-minute taxi when the shuttle doesn't show.
